A little about me...
I am a psychologist with over 20 years of clinical experience, and have been licensed in Oregon and in private practice since 1999. I specialize in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, which is a type of therapy that helps people increase their self-understanding and insight, with the goal of identifying emotional issues and difficulties that may be negatively affecting relationships, optimal functioning, and general life satisfaction. I assist clients with a variety of issues including, but not limited to, anxiety, depression, grief, childhood trauma, relationship difficulties, anger, divorce, and parenting. I work in a collaborative manner and believe that in order for treatment to be effective, both therapist and client have to be motivated toward a common goal. Typical therapy outcomes include less overall distress; a better ability to manage difficult emotions; an improvement in communication and self-esteem; and increased satisfaction in relationships. I strive to create an environment in which clients feel safe, respected, and comfortable. My style as a therapist is curious, attuned, and active. I’m not the sort of therapist who sits in silence but am also conscientious about making plenty of room for a person to have their experience. I am reliable, trustworthy, approachable, and have a direct style.
I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the University of California at San Diego (1990); and my Masters (1993) and Doctorate (1997) Degrees in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology in the Bay Area. I moved to Oregon toward the end of my graduate training to complete an internship and subsequently obtained my license in 1999, at which point I started my private practice.
I have a forensic background and for many years conducted evaluations for the courts, primarily in parenting matters. I have also worked extensively for the Department of Corrections, providing mental health services to inmates for several years. In 2007, I decided to focus my time building my psychotherapy practice, and participated in the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Program at the Oregon Psychoanalytic Center in Portland (2007 - 2009). Additionally, I recently completed psychoanalytic training at the Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis in Los Angeles (2013 - 2020).
I am actively involved with the Oregon Psychoanalytic Center, serving as both chair and faculty for the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Program, teaching classes on theory and technique. I previously served a brief tenure on the Board of Directors for the organization, as well as the Recruitment Committee. I have also been a Board member for the Oregon Psychological Association and served on the Continuing Education Committee for that organization, as well as for the Northwest Center for Psychoanalysis. Additionally, I was a public member of the State Professional Responsibility Board for the Oregon Bar Association, and I have taught Ethics to graduate psychology students at Pacific University.
